Sea Cadet Corps (SCC)

About
SCC is a voluntary organization founded by Sri.Gokuldas Ahuja in the year 1938. In Kochi , SCC is held at The Venduruthy Naval Base, Willingdon Island .
How to Join
Students can join SCC when they are between the ages of 10 and 12. I joined SCC when I was in 7th Std. There was a written test and an interview which I passed easily.
Activities
SCC is held every Sunday at Naval Base. We do sailing, pulling, swimming and lot of other adventurous activities. Capsizing, taking charge of a platoon, giving punishments as well as getting punishments are all part of SCC. We have parade every Sunday morning.

Our seniors also teach us Bends and Hitches which is all about knots. We have Morse code, piping, semaphore etc which are a means of communication, in Navy, when one is onboard a ship.

Every year we have cycle expeditions and annual SCC camps. Cycle expedition is great fun as we all ride our own cycle together as a group and travel to places like Kodanad.

Annual Camps
Annual camps are held for 8 continuous days and comprise of many interesting competitions like rifle drill, parade, sailing, quiz etc. Boys have to stay there while girls have to report there at 7.30 AM and can return home at 5.30 PM. All the cadets are provided with lunch at a complex which is called ‘the 340 men complex’ situated inside the Naval Base campus.

My first camp was held from 21st April 2014 to 28th April 2014. In my batch there were four girls but for the camp I was the only girl from my batch. On the first and second day we had to take classes for our juniors and we also had to conduct a few competitions. On the third day of my camp I went for sailing on an ‘enterprise’ class of sail boat. Enterprise is one type of sail boat in which the sail boat has to be controlled by two people namely the Helm and the crew. The senior becomes the helm and the junior becomes the crew. And on that day one of my senior and I went on an enterprise it was the first time that I sailed on an enterprise. The day was windy and sunny and was best suited for sailing. We sailed around the large ships and around The Cochin shipyard and retuned back to the jetty for lunch. After we had our lunch at the ‘340 men complex’, we returned back to the boat shed at 3:00pm and we went for sailing again at 4:00pm. This time the current was high and the wind was too strong. We did hiking and tried lot of tricks on our boat. The current started to get harsh and wind was now harder….the boat’s edge and the water seemed to be on the same level...water started getting into our boat….and then suddenly! Our boat capsized! And we were in the waters…the same water that one sees when travelling by the bus over the Venduruthy Bridge …But I was not at all scared…I just followed the orders of my senior and we together managed to get the boat upright. It was an unforgettable, exciting and a wonderful experience which is why I thought of writing about it in my school magazine and sharing it with all of you. I believe the wonderful things that I learn at the SCC is going to be very helpful in my life and I wish this for all of my friends and that is why I sincerely feel that they should enroll too.
